Introduction The European Union has become the new "sick man of Europe". The euro crisis that had begun in 2009 has exposed a range of intra-European problems which were long hidden. A study by Pew Research Center in 2013 revealed the growing drift in public opinion on the state of the European Union (EU) . According to Pew Research Center report, since 2012 the support for EU had plummeted on the continent. The report also said that the economic crisis and currency woes have rapidly eroded faith among the Europeans. The report surveyed eight countries namely Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Poland and the Czech Republic and only Greece and Italy surprisingly held a weak hope of European economic integration. According to the report the European project stood in disrepute across much of Europe . José Manuel Barroso, former prime minister of Portugal and 11th President of the European Commission (EC), commenting on decline in trust on EU and Euro-zone had said that at the time of growing unemployment, uncertainty and growing inequality, the European dream has come under threat from a resurgence of populism and nationalism. |
